New U of A gallery is a legacy of education
23 June 2025
Sandra and Kenneth Wong were looking for a way to make a lasting change. When they heard about the opportunity to support a new gallery for the 91³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏÍø collections, they knew they had found the perfect project to create the change they envisioned.
The Kenneth and Sandra Wong Gallery will be a 5,000-square-foot gallery — five times the current gallery space. Construction is set to begin in July 2025, with an opening exhibition planned for early 2027. The new gallery will be located in the Telus Centre at the intersection of North Campus and the Garneau neighbourhood in Edmonton.
“The idea came that, well, we should do something more substantial, more lasting,” said Kenneth Wong. “We have so much heritage in the collection … in arts, in sciences. So, for the people who come here, I hope that they will enjoy the breadth of knowledge. Because it is a teaching gallery, too.”
The U of A is home to 30 collections and millions of artifacts. The new space will allow for dynamic, interactive exhibitions and public programs that bring together the collections in new and exciting ways.
As the gallery construction begins, so does the work to create an endowment to support the programming and sustainable operation of the gallery. This includes exhibitions, lectures, programs for students from K to 12 and workshops. The gallery will also create both job opportunities and hands-on learning for U of A students.
Admission to the gallery will be free for everyone.
For Kenneth and Sandra, the new gallery space means their vision of making a positive long-term difference in the world has become a reality.
“I know that money means nothing if it is not spent wisely,” says Sandra.
